Scenic Rail Journeys of Love

Overview

Tour the noteworthy locations of Sri Lanka through scenic railway adventures. Visit Tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya, go across mountainsides as you head to Kandy, or visit beachside cities like Bentota. Enjoy picturesque views as the journey unfolds.

Day 01

Arrive in Sri Lanka for the beginning of your spectacular journey. Head to Colombo where you travel by car to Kandy, the ancient city of wonders. En route, stop by the magnificent Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, home to a cluster of elephant herds. These creatures have come into this care due to injuries or being orphaned. You can see the moments of joy as caretakers help the elephants feed and bathe. Once near Kandy, make a second stop at the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. View the splendid locale of this nature reserve that is home to an abundance of plant life. With flowers and various pollinators present, it is a massive help to the ecosystem. Finally, reach Kandy, a vibrant city filled with vivid architecture and lots of history. You can stroll the city at your leisure and visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic where the sacred relic of Lord Buddha is protected.

Wake up in the early hours of the morning and head to the Kandy Train Station, where you catch a ride to Nanu Oya and Nuwara Eliya. This central town is a cool and collected city, with hills painted green with tea plantations creating a serene environment. Take a walk through the plantations and learn about the vast history relating to it. Visit a factory where this world-class tea is produced and enjoy a fresh cup of tea. Enter the city where the stunning Gregory Lake is located. Take a thrilling boat ride or engage in the other fun water activities that are available. As the day comes to an end, retire to your stay for the night.

From Nanu Oya, enter the train to travel to Ella. Ella is another famous city in the central hills of Sri Lanka, known for its ziplining opportunities, vivid sights and the Nine Arches Bridge. Travel through mountains and see waterfalls clashing with the ground in the distance. Enjoy the vibrant scenery that is unique to this train ride.

Have an adventurous mindset when you wake up. Travel to Little Adam’s Peak where you can hike to the summit for a satisfying view of Ella Gap. Once this thrilling hike is over head to the Nine Arches Bridge to take in the view and capture some amazing photos of the surrounding landscape. Go back to your accommodation and spend the night there. 

Bid farewell to Ella as you take a car ride to the warm climate of Yala. This location is known best for the National Park which is filled with a variety of wildlife. Make a stop at the Ravana Waterfall to enjoy the scenery and take some pictures for the memories. After you reach Yala, visit the Yala National Park. This park is a nature reserve that is home to various species of animals. A large amount of Asian Elephant herds live here with other vivid creatures. Enjoy the exciting views of this excursion and head back to your lodging to rest.

The greatest location to see whales and dolphins is Mirissa. Dolphins and whales can be seen breaking the surface of the ocean on a boat trip from this coastal city. Spend some time interacting with the whales and watch how they interact with one another exhibiting their close-knit family relationships. After that, take some time to explore the beaches and savour Mirissas delicious seafood dishes.

Hop on the next train heading to Bentota, a tropical paradise that is perfect for relaxing and adventure. Prior to leaving, spend time in the morning going out on a whale-watching expedition and viewing these majestic creatures. Once you arrive in Bentota, visit the turtle hatchery that is aimed at conserving the dwindling population of various turtle species. Enjoy the sights and scenes of Bentota, and make your way to the Madu River. Roam through the water, taking in the breathtaking sights of the surroundings and keep your eyes peeled for the various birds that inhabit this land.

Head back to Colombo on the train. Once there, you can explore the modern beauty of Colombo. Shop in the various malls and stores, find gems and traditional crafts and explore Sri Lankan fusion cuisine. Spend the night with locals and enjoy the vibrant nightlife.

If time is available, spend it in Colombo with more shopping and dining, then make your way to the airport for departure.
